Bauke Mollema ensured the largest success of his career when he won the Tour of Lombardy race, the last of this years fiveMonument classics.
The 32-year-old Trek-Segafredo riders ended 16 seconds clear and assaulted 20km from the finish.
10 years younger than Mollema, tour de France champion Egan Bernal, was thirdparty.
Mollema is the Dutch winner of this race and also the first as Hennie Kuiper at 1981.
He made his split kilometres from the summit in the 243km race into the banks of Lake Como, ahead of a bunch comprising Valverde Bernal and Vuelta a Espana winner Primoz Roglic against Bergamo.
I was not the favourite so possibly the other cyclists underestimated me a little, said the Dutchman, who won a stage of the Tour de France in 2017, and the San Sebastian classic in 2016.
I found the ideal moment to attack. I went full gas. Its unreal.
In his 11th try at a vintage, Mollema had built a lead of 40 seconds in the base of San Fermo della Battaglia, the final scale eight kilometres in the lineup, and kept off late attacks from both Roglic and Valverde to provide his team their 10th success of this season.
39, spaniard Valverde, recorded his third second-place end in the race, getting the oldest rival to achieve a podium finish.
Tour of Lombardy outcome:
